I feel most fortunate, to have been entrusted with numerous items once owned by Blanche Barrow Frasure. Among these items are many photos, who's time frames range from her life before Buck and Bonnie & Clyde-- to near the end of her illustrious life.
I'll let these photos speak for themselves, and will answer questions within your comments. The cool dog Blanche had during WWII, with the dark head and mostly white body (which was visible only from the back in the previously unreleased Blanche photo)-- was named Valentine. From it's looks, I believe this dog may have been a Basenji. The building as shown in a picture taken by Blanche, with her Kodak camera and inscribed to her father Matt-- is Farm 1, Blanche's prison residence at Jefferson City.
Notice the painted tree trunks. This could have been done, to prevent the inmates from using the trees as cover.

I'm glad that Blanche got another dog - silly as I am, one of the things that bothers me is that poor Snowball took off and ran and nothing more is known about him! (All of my animals are "rescue dogs," so I will assume that someone took a cutie like Snowball home with them - he looks a lot like my Finnegan!) Blanche must have been a real pet-lover to have been willing to take Snowball along with her on what she must have suspected would not be just a pleasure trip, and it's always bothered me that she lost him! At any rate, it's good to see her with another dog around.
ReplyDeleteThe white dog with the black head is actually a smooth coated fox terrier.
ReplyDeleteHi Judith--
ReplyDeleteThanks much for your comment. However, I wish I could be more sure about that. Smooth Coated Fox Terrier ears don't point, usually droop. And Jan Petrozella's dog looks very close to Valentine, with the over sized ears always at point. Please note latest Blanche post from September 15th. With facial characteristics, those ears and with the strength in body mass evident-- 'think that's a Basenji. Also Smooth Fox Terriers have 1/2 tails, while Basenjis have short curled tails. I can look at other pics of Valentine I have, but don't recall seeing longer tail, as the Terrier would have.
American Pit Bull Terriers are my thing.. but I try to know key elements from as many breeds as I can. There's one person who knew Blanche, who might know for sure concerning Valentine. I will try and contact her, to see if I can find out.
